Hi friends! Do you all keep up with Chiara, blogger of The Blonde Salad
? Shes beautiful, Italian and judging from her blog header, has my kind of sense of humor. I loved this outfit
she posted recently. Neutrals, check! Big sunglasses, check! Color popping lips and missoni shawl, check! All my favorite things.
you know that perfect feeling of a breezy lightness that only happens the first beach visit of the year? before the sun has reached its summer scorching height yet and there is still cool air coming off the ocean?
yes. that is what i am channeling right now as i sit in my landlocked row house in georgetown. that breezy - ideally early morning before its crowded - beach feeling. i know summer and yellow bathers and the beach are still a few weeks away but i'm getting excited already!
i hope you all have a breezy lovely weekend.
Ps. buy a print
hello! so this morning i suddenly realized that with all the hustle and bustle of prepping for the stationery show i had only drawn one thing this week. how sad! so i decided to sit down and draw something just for me, well just for you dear blog friends.
and i couldn't think of anything! all this prep work had turned off my creative brain! i had the worst case of illustrators block. it was a little scary, ideas are always swirling around my head, its so second nature to me to have creativity be a part of my day. not having an idea for a sketch was like suddenly realizing i couldn't remember how to walk.
so i was all disgruntled and then i remembered that earlier this week Cassie
, blogger and owner of the worlds most amazing dog, invited me to join pinterest. (no, dont get too excited, i haven't pinned anything) so i started poking around and it was like the switch flipped back on and millions of ideas and inspirations rushed back in!
I found a photograph
on my friend Katie Rogers of PAPERFASHION's pinterest page
that inspired this above illustration. I don't know who photographed it or who designed the dress or who styled the shoot or who she is or where she is and I LOVE THAT. Its so nice just to find something pretty and paint it without instructions or intentions beyond just mixing colors.
Sigh of relief! Ok now back to tackling real projects.
Ps. Orange Crush is available as a print
! Sorry I haven't done more for sale lately. Ooops!
Happy Birthday Elisa! Once upon a time, in a land of toile curtains and matching bedspreads, Elisa and I were roomies. Now she's down in Texas enlightening young minds while wearing delightfully colorful outfits. She can wear more colors and patterns than any one else I know. These sketches do not nearly do her amazing outfit pairing skills (or her gravity defying, beautiful hair) justice.
This post is also an ode to my favorite thing about the month of May. I finally feel like I can wear dresses dresses dresses of all shapes and sizes and hem lengths without tights or heels and it is so liberating. I love the simplicity of just putting on one thing in the morning and being ready to go - enjoy the little things, right?
Happy May! This months illustration is inspired by a Louis Vuitton look from last spring (i think?) I should really keep better track of my inspiration sources.
Happy Royal Wedding Eve everyone! Are you waking up tomorrow for the big show? The mature, busy, adult me knows that its crazy to wake up in the middle of the night for this, but the little girl inside me is SO EXCITED.
So, day after day literally for the last month everyone and their mother has weighed in on the most pressing international issue the world has ever faced - What Will Kate Wear!?
And I have been repulsed by most of the predictions. Every morning the Today Show trolls out four or five of the most horrifying wedding gowns modeled by homely girls that don't even look vaguely like the magnificent Kate and its just so disappointing.
And then I open up US weekly and see fashion illustration sketches by all the major design houses predicting Kate's gown and they are completely unrealistic and unflattering. I'm sorry but I just don't think Kate is going to wear an entire dead swan worth of feathers over her left hip or a medieval wizardry costume on the day she marries into royalty.
If she was smart enough to somehow figure out how to get the king of England to marry her, shes smart enough not to look crazy doing it. Sorry, I'm all fired up. But why make these bridal forecasts if you are not going to be practical about it?
Which is what lead me to make a prediction of my own in the form of the above sketch. This is what I hope Kate looks like. I'll love whatever she wears because shes just naturally tasteful but this is what I am imagining her in.
I have it on good authority from an actual real live bride who has tried on this Monique Lhuilier
dress that it fits beautifully. And I hope she chooses one of the more organic, youthful tiaras instead of the huge architectural ones. Well no, maybe I do like those better. I could think about royal tiaras all day every day and never decide which is my favorite.
And she has such perfect hair so I hope she has it down. Her hair is her thing
, if its up I don't think I'll recognize her!
So there you have it. What is your prediction??
