Don't you wish you were her? She's a new sketch for Shannon of The Simply Luxurious Life to help celebrate her new section on her blog about french-inspired living. Shannon has the best taste, her commission requests are always so chic and this one was no different. You should all visit her blog, beautiful images and a beautiful approach to a simple, luxurious life.

Also - notice this new favorite pose for figures in this blog post and the one right before it. I call this pose the "I'm walking one direction but looking adorably slightly confused in another direction because a group of italian men just shouted Ciao Bella! at me"

Maison Ilan - Le Chambertin 2010

July 26, 2012 13 Comments

This is something new and different and totally exciting for me to share with you all.

Behold my very first wine label design.

From my embarrassingly limited understanding of the world of wine, this label will grace bottles of Maison Ilan's newest vintage of Le Chambertin... which is a Grand Cru from one of the oldest vineyards in one of the oldest wine regions in the world. Burgundy ... which is a Big. Deal.

Not to bad for my first label eh? Everyone who has asked me about this project has asked "oh is it a west coast producer?" and I've relished getting to haughtily inform them that my label is for a French wine.

Really, becoming a wine snob is not hard to do.

The project began with this loose watercolor...

and through the vision of Ray Walker, the man behind the wine, it evolved and became a refined portrait of the vineyard... Next we carefully chose fonts - which I then recreated by hand - confirming yet again that I do not have attention deficit disorder.

Yes, this took a while, to put it mildly. But I couldn't be prouder of how it turned out, or more relieved to know if this whole illustration thing falls through I may have a future as calligrapher.

The finishing flourish was the vine border, which you will notice combines both grapes and roses. This particular vineyard has rose bushes near the rows of vines...

I could go on and on about this and tell you the significance of every line of text, but I'll stop. I may be a wine snob now, but I know when to stop flexing my new found knowledge and get back to what you really want...

So, I'll be back soon with girls and dresses!

People Watching

January 13, 2011 8 Comments

Bonjour! I considered writing this whole post in french, but then i realized it would be much more of a mess than when Garance tries to type her posts sans translator. (and i might add, much less charming) but yes, this illustration is inspired by Paris-loving blogger, Taylor of shut up, i love that who shares a passion for these ridiculously amazing Louboutin flats and suggested the only really worthy environment to illustrate them in was Paris. I haven't had the luxury of spending nearly enough time in Paris YET, but the few times I've been, one of my favorite parts is (croissant eating aside) people watching. (because croissant eating is one of my favorite parts of being in pretty much any city on earth) So yes, thats what thats all about. I tried to capture Taylor's tres chic bangs too. If only my forehead were a tad higher and i could have bangs too... sigh, i'll never be french. and I kind of like my structured satchel I dreamed up. Maybe I'll become a purse maker. What is that called, not a cobbler? A demain! oh yes don't forget to buy a print!
