Still Life Gone Wild
A 2018 original work in watercolor on Arches paper. Framed behind UV protective museum plexi glass with a white frame and mat. Overall framed size of 40x50"
Inspired by the traditional fruits and flowers found in an Old Masters style still life, but without the oily black void receding into infinity behind it. You know? More cheerful, crisp, chintz-y playful pattern, and less foreboding meditation on mortality. I wanted to capture the coral red and inside-of-sea-shell pink you'd find feathered throughout a fancy variegated tulip. And the cornflower blue that explodes when painted near a golden tiger yellow. These are primary colors being anything but primary. Several friends have felt drawn toward this piece as if to hug it when they see it. I think it is because the colors evoke a sense of Italian Grandma. Welcome home! it is saying, You look too skinny have some pasta!
